Frederick Van Matre (1886-1952)
Frederick Van Matre, born Frederick Nathan Van Matre to Willis Wiley and Sarah Eudora “Dora” (Hunnell) Van Matre. Although not in the direct line I am following, I felt his story is worth sharing. He was known as Fred Van Matre and in some cases Fred N. Van Matre, in many records and newspaper articles.
Born: 22 May 1886 in Farmers Valley Township, Hailton County, Nebraska, USA.
Died: 17 Oct 1952. at the age of 66 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA.

Lillian Alvina Wolf daughter of Robert A. and Sarah “Sadie” Ann (Hibbard) Wolf.
Note: There is an online post for Charles Perry Niswonger1 where it states “In 1901 occurred the marriage of Mr. Niswonger and Sadie Hibbard, a daughter of James Hibbard, a well known farmer of Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Niswonger have two children: Lillian Alvina, who married Fred Van Matre of Bend; and Ida Jennette, who is a junior in the Willamette University…” Charles is the second husband of the widow Sadie (Hibbard) Wolf.
Born: 16 Sep 1891 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.
Died: 14 Jul 1979 at the age of 87 in Linn County, Oregon, USA.
Find A Grave: Memorial #86736388 buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Bend, Deschutes County, Oregon, USA.
What brought Fred to Central Oregon is not known, but what we do know is that Fred along with his uncles, Fred and Wilbur Hunnell, came to Central Oregon in 1908. His aunts Florence Hunnell and Lily (Hunnell) Brandenburgh, along with her husband Lemuel Brandenburgh, came to Oregon at the same time or soon after.
About the same time, Fred’s father Willis Wiley Van Matre and family, including current wife Caroline (Hunnell) Van Matre, her brother George and her mother, moved to Missouri. Willis, Caroline and their children would join Fred in Central Oregon in 1914.
Fred Van Matre and Fred Hunnell opened/purchased a Brick Manufacturing company and Fred Van Matre later became a well known builder and contractor.
Brick Manufacturing
The following notices were found in the Bend Bulletin newspaper:
August 31, 19102
BUYS BRICK YARD.
Horn Acquires Property and Will Greatly Improve It.
A.H. Horn, who acquired an interest in the Bend Brick & Tyle Co. together with F. A. Hunnell, Fred Van Matre and G. W. Gertson in May, took over the entire property on August 5th. In June the company was incorporated with a capital stock of $20,000 all now controlled by Mr. and Mrs. Horn.
The present capacity of the yard is 15,000 brick a day. This will be doubled next spring, says Mr. Horn, when a lot of the best machinery will be installed.

A MANUFACTURING PLANT.
Will Start Manufacture of Brick West of Town.
Fred Van Matre, Fred Hunnell and George Gertson, all Bend men, have arrangements about completed for opening a brick manufacturing plant on the Barney Lewis homestead. The tract contains a large acreage of brick clay and the ranch was recently purchased by these men with the expectation of putting in a brick plant there. It lies about a mile and a half west of Bend.
The firm has already secured an engine, and has ordered a machine with a capacity of 20,000 bricks a day. The plant will be power driven. The machine should reach Bend about March 1, and the expectation is to have brick on the market by the time building operations begin in the spring.
The clay makes an A 1 brick, Mr. Hunnell is an experienced brick maker, and the new concern promises to put out an article as good as any.
At the bottom of the same page in the last column the following announcement was posted:
Van Matre-Wolf.
Last Wednesday morning Mr. Fred Van Matre and Miss Lillian Wolf quietly slipped away to Prineville and came back as man and wife. The knot was tied in the Presbyterian manse by the Rev. C. C. Babbidge, with Miss Etta Daw acting as bridesmaid and Wilford H. Belknap as best man. Thursday the young couple returned to Bend and were serenaded that evening by the Bend band, and the customary tin can brigade.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Matre are estimable young people and their many friends will wish them much joy and happiness. They will be at home to their friends on their ranch west of town.

BRICK YARD IN OPERATION
First Bend Brick made Successfully, Machine is installed.
The first installment of brick made of Bend clay by Bend manufacture, 50,000 in number, have just emerged from the kiln. The brick were made on the old Barney Lewis place two miles west of town, which now is the property of Messrs. Van Matre, Fred Hunnell and George Gerston, who are operating the brick yard.
These brick are hand-made. A brick-making machine, however, arrives in Bend tonight and will be installed and put in operation at once. Its capacity will be 15,000 a day. The clay, which is inexhaustible in quantity, is of a very high quality and makes an excellent product. The backers of the new enterprise declare that the further down they go the better becomes the clay, and that their machine-made brick will be the equal of those anywhere obtainable.
Five years ago a kiln of brick was burned at the same place, which proved to be of excellent quality.

Fred Van Matre is mentioned frequently in the Bend Bulletin over the years. He became a popular contractor and is mentioned in relation to many of his projects and family visits. I found the following one of interest.
April 26, 1917 – FILES AFFIDAVIT State of Oregon, County of Seschutes, ss.
I, Fred N. Van Matre, of Bend, Oregon, being first duly sworn, depose and say that I have read in the newspapers and heard otherwise, statements to the effect that in a public “trial of Frank Sheffield for “Bootlegging,” my name was mentioned in the testimony in such a way as to give the impression that I was associted with the said Sheffield in his illigal acts; that, as a matter of fact, I never received from said Sheffield, directly or indirectly, any intoxicating liquor whatsoever, nor did I know or have reason to believe that he was handling or disposing of such liquor, though on a recent occasion I did see him in an intoxicated condition and warned him to keep off the street– the only time I ever spoke to the man; that I never received from him any package whatsoever, containing liquor or anything else, at any time; that I was not subpoenaed as a witness in the case against Sheffield, though word was left as [at?] my house asking me to appear at the trial, which I took no notice of because I had several men employed in work that needed my attention, and I did not suppose a matter of any special importance would be so informally treated; that I make this sworn statement for the purpose of correcting the false and injurious reports about me in the connection.
FRED N. VAN MATRE,
Subscribed and sworn to before me at m office in Bend, Oregon, this 20th day of April, 1917.
J. M. LAWRENCE,
Notary Public for Oregon.
During the early years, there are many references in the sports section for both Baseball and Football, referencing Van Matre as a player. I assume this was Fred. In one Football game (Bend Bulletin, October 21, 1914), “Every player was a star,” says Coach Erskine. While that is quite true, it is also accurate to say that an offensive work Steidl, Brandenburg, Kelley and Thompson distinguished themselves, while Van Matre and Hunnel, tackles shown on the defense.”
Fred Van Matre the Contractor
Construction projects in Bend and Redmond were mentioned in the National Register of Historic Places Multiple Property Documentation form as follows:6
Fred N. Van Matre
Fred Van Matre (1886-1952), a native of Nebraska, settled outside Redmond sometime before 1910. He began his career as a brick maker with his own brick yard and later became a general contractor, active throughout Central Oregon. In April 1939, The Redmond Spokesman reported that Fred Van Matre, Central Oregon contractor, “had a part in the construction of most buildings put up in Redmond during the last 20 years.” Van Matre moved to Bend by 1920 and worked in his own contracting business into at least the 1940s, during which time his eldest daughter, Mabel, worked as the bookkeeper for the construction company. He is known to have completed the construction on the Spokesman Building (321 SW 6th St., 1939) and the expansion of the Lynch & Roberts Store (403 SW 6th St., 1930) It is not clear if he built any residences in Redmond.
Many projects included but were not limited to:
- 1928 – The New Redmond Hotel7, built in 1928 after a fire destroyed the original wood frame Redmond Hotel the year before. “…The building was constructed by a local contracting firm led by Ole K. Olson and his partner S. Elmer Erickson. Another general contractor, Fred N. VanMatre, also helped with the construction.”
- 1932 – The Old Post Office8 , as noted on the National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination Form “…Many of the materials used in construction were imported to the areas, including the marble, terrazo flooring and special facing bricks for the veneer finish. Whenever possible, however, local contractors and materials were used. This employment provided an obvious boost to the local economy. James Crawford received the sand and gravel contract, and Fred Van Matre did the excavation. Van Matre’s local brick yard was tapped for the “backing” bricks. As a result, Van Matre hired additional labor for six weeks during the production of the 175,000 bricks required….”
- 1935 – Square Deal Furniture Co.9 The following large ad was printed in The Bulletin by Square Deal Furniture, H.G. Rainey, Corner Bond Street and Minnesota Avenue, Telephone 324, Bend, Oregon. April 17, 1935, To Fred Van Matre, Contractor Bend, Oregon. “Dear Sir, We take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the speed and efficiency with which our store was rebuilt and remodeled following our fire on April 22. In just 48 days our store was changed from a charred ruin to a most modern and up-to-the-minute establishment. It was a job well done! Yours very truly H.G.Rainey, Square Deal Furniture Co.”
- 1938 – Deschutes County Library (Bend)10 – “Fred Van Matre was the contractor…”
- 1939 – Bend City Hall11 “The 32,000 building was begun in December by Fred N. Van matre, Bend contractor…”
- 1939 – The Redmond Spokesman12 “..The Redmond Spokesman building exhibits many distinctive components of the Art Deco style. It was built by Fred Van Matre, a Central Oregon contractor who built numerous buildings in Central Oregon during the 1930s and 1940’s including the Tower Theater and the Deschutes County Library in Bend….”
- 1939 – The Sisters High School13 – …”Fred Van Metre(sic) was the contractor….”
- 1939 – Bend Fire Hall Annex14 – “Fred Van Matre awarded contract of the Bend fire hall annex work.”
- 1940 – The Bend Bulletin Building15 “Construction of the new Bulletin building and the preparation of it for occupancy required the services of no less than 92 men, it is shown by the records of the general contractor, Fred N. Van Matre, of his sub-contractors…”.
- 1940 – The Tower Theatre16 – “Van Matre’s Eternal Tambourine by Avlis Leumas – About the piece. This piece was inspired by Bend’s Tower Theatre, which was built by Fred Van Matre in 1940. He was regarded as well-humored and fashioned “good value and honest workmanship” into the structures he built. Much like Van Matre, birds have a playful aspiration to ascend the apex…”
- 1941 – Centennial Maple Lanes Bowling Alley17 One of Oregon’s Most Modern Alleys. Every detail of our new alleys is modern and up-to-the-minute. Our new building constructed by Mr. Fred Van Matre, has been built specifically for bowling. It is lighted with 54 fluorescent lights and is automatically heated to the proper temperature with Butane Gas. Lockers are available for the use of bowlers and ample seating space has been provided for spectators.”
- 1941 – Sillery Motor Plant[efn_noted]Sillery Motor Plant Formally Opened Today, The Bend Bulletin, Bend, Oregon, 1 Jul 1941, Tuesday, page 8, retrieved from newspapers.com (Accessed 7 Aug 2023).[/efn_note]
“…Erected by Fred N. Van Matre, the Sillery Motors plant has a frontage on Greenwood avenue, on the route of the central Oregon highway…” - 1942 – Bend Airport Hangar Building18 “Construction was started this morning on an 80 by 100 foot hangar building at the Butler market road airport by Fred N. Van Matre, Bend contractor…”
- 1946 – Evan Fly Company19 – “The new addition to the evans Fly company, built by Fred Van Matre local contractor, bids fair to be an attraction to the open house visitors with its knotty pine interior and decorations of mounted deer and antelope heads, pheasants, cougars and other wild game.”
