Joseph and Anna Imoehl were both buried at Saints Philip and James Catholic Cemetery, St. James, Cedar County, Nebraska [about a mile east of Wynot, Nebraska.]

Joseph was born in Festina, Iowa and at the age of 21 moved to St. James, Iowa. He married Anna Reifenrath in an area called Brookey Bottom, a few miles northeast of St. James. See my post on Wynot, St. James and Brookey Bottom for the story about this area. Anna’s parents owned property in the Brookey Bottom area, outlined in red below.

Joseph and Anna purchased a farm just south of St. James where they farmed and raised their children. You can see the location in section 36 highlighted in blue on the 1917 partial plat map to the right.

Joseph Imoehl was born in 1874 in Festina, Iowa, the son of Joseph Imoehl Sr. and Helena Doerr.  He came to Cedar County at an early age.  He married Anna Reifenrath on November 16, 1897, in a little chapel in a school house in Brookey Bottom by Father Henry Schoof, pioneer priest of the St. Helena parish from 1879 to 1902.  Their witnesses were John Reifenrath and Emilee Imoehl.  Anna was born in 1875, the daughter of Gerlach and Mary (Schmidt) Reifenrath, of Brookey Bottom.  Joe farmed but was more interested in working with a forge and anvil.  He also enjoyed smoking a pipe and he loved to eat lots of onions.

Joseph and Anna had 3 children.  Rose married Fritz Pinkelman. Mary married Lawrence Pinkelman. George died in infancy.  Anna is remembered as always having candy and gum for the grandchildren. Joseph Imoehl died in 1948 and his wife, Anna, died in 1951.  They are both buried in the SS. Philip and James Cemetery.

They celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1947.

Funeral Rites Held for Cedar County Man 2

Wydnot, Neb.–– Special: Funeral services were held here for Joseph Imoehl, 74, at the Catholic church at St. James.

Mr. Imoehl was born March 4, 1874, at Festina, Ia. At the age of 21 he came to Cedar county, Neb., and had resided in this vicinity since that time. On November 16, 1897 he married Miss Anna Reifenrath.

Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Pinkelman and Mrs. Fritz Pinkelman, both of Wynot; six sisters; two brothers and 10 grandchildren.

Imoehl Rites at St. James Daughter of Pioneers Dies on August 2nd 3

WYNOT –– Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Phillip and James church at St. James for Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Imoehl, who died August 2 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fritz S. Pinkelman. Rev. “Godfred Melergerd officiated at the service. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Winter Mortuary. Pallbearers were Edmund and Edward Pinkelman, Art and Florenz Burbach and Alphonse and Joseph Reifenrath.

Mrs. Imoehl, who had been in poor for several years, was a lifelong resident of Cedar county and of this community. She was born February 4, 1875, at Brookey Bottom, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerlach Reifenrath, early pioneers of this section.

November 18, 1897 she was married to Joseph Imoehl in a little church at the Brooky Bottom school, by Father Schoof, early day priest for Cedar county. They farmed for almost half a century near here. Mr. Imoehl died September 16, 1948 at their farm home south of Wynot.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Fritz S. Pinkelman (Rose) and Mrs. Lawrence Pinkelman (Mary). Also two brothers, John G. Reifenrath and August Reifenrath of Wynot and one sister, Miss Clara M. Reifenrath, of Kansas City, Kansas.

Coming from a distance to attend the services were a niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Wieseler of Rochester, Minn.

Joseph and Anna (Reifenrath) Imoehl Children

  3. Mary Catherine Imoehl daughter of Joseph William and Anna (Reifenrath) Imoehl, was born on 10 Sep 1906 in Cedar County, Nebraska, USA. She died on 07 Jan 1987 at the age of 80 in Wynot, Cedar County, Nebraska, USA. She married Lawrence Anton Pinkelman, son of Frank J. and Anna (Schroeder) Pinkelman, on 20 Feb 1936.
