Henry John Ruehl II son of Henry Ruehl I and Elizabeth (Dörr) Ruehl

Henry is showing as Henry John, John Henry, and J. H. I’ve found some confusion in webgens with his brother John. The census records I found list Margaretha as Margaret. Some documents show her as Maggie, which is what her family most likely called her, and not to be confused with Henry’s sister, Maggie.
Henry John Ruehl II and Margaretha (Heck) Ruehl Story
Based on records I could uncover, we see that Henry II and Margaret Heck married in St. Paul Minnesota in 1890. Henry was 31 years old when they married and Margaretha was 21. Although they married in St. Paul, Minnesota, their first two children, Cyrilla and Harry, were born in Sioux City, Iowa (1891 and 1894), by 1896 they have moved to Nebraska, where their daughters Pauline, Marie and Dorothy were born. Their daughters Elizabeth, Florentine and Margaret were born in Minnesota (1907-1911).
In 1891 Henry sold property in Sioux City proper for $2,200.00
In 1895 we find the following legal notice in the Sioux City, Iowa Journal:
The 1900 census shows them owning their own farm in Covington Precinct, Dakota County, Nebraska.
By 1910 they must have sold the farm because Henry is showing as a hotel proprietor and they were renting their home in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their daughter Cyrilla was living at home at 18 years old and is showing as a cashier at a grocery store, they now have 7 living children, 2 children not living. Their daughter, Florentine is showing as a son, but all future records show her as female.
By 1920 Henry is 60 and working on his own account as a carpenter and they are still renting in St. Paul. they have another daughter, Margaret showing as 9 years old. Their daughter Cyrilla is married to Charles J. Lick and they are living with them. Oddly, five of their children are showing as Lodgers.
A 1928 St. Paul, Minnesota Directory shows them:

By the 1930 US Federal Census, all children except for Florentine had left home and Henry was proprietor of a rooming house in St. Paul. I have not listed all the residents of the rooming house, only the three family members.
A 1934 St. Paul, Minnesota City Directory shows them:

By the 1940 US Federal Census, Henry had died the previous year and we find Margaret head of household, living with her daughters, Pauline and Elizabeth in St. Paul.

Census records were given to a census taker typically by someone in the household and sometimes even by a neighbor. Also, information is subject to interpretation by the census taker.
1895 Iowa State Census, Ossian, Military Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Henry is living with his siblings, John, Maggie and Katie. All are showing as being born in Pennsylvania, so perhaps the older sisters gave the information (since they were born in Pennsylvania, Henry and John being born in New Jersey).

Henry John and Margaretha (Heck) Ruehl Children
- Cyrilla Ruehl daughter of Henry John and Margaretha (Heck) Ruehl was born on 14 Jul 1891 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, USA. She died in Feb 1979 at the age of 87 in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona, USA. She married Charles Joseph Lick son of Charles Lick and Bertha (Wolfurth) Lick, on 14 May 1912 in St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota, USA. He was born on 15 Apr 1893 in St Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. He died on 08 Feb 1970 at the age of 76 in Los Angeles County, California, USA.
–Cyrilla and Carl Lick had a daughter, Patricia M. Lick, who married Jimmy G. Mearos, son of Alton Hughes and Margaret Elizabeth (Bunge) Meares. Jimmy was a US Army Veteran.

The 1940 US Federal census shows Pauline as a Stenographer for Community Day Auction State as a Government employee. She apparently relocated to Los Angeles at some point before death, perhaps with other siblings.
–Marie Ruehl daughter of Henry John and Margaretha (Heck) Ruehl was born in May 1899 in Nebraska, USA. She died in Nov 1976 at the age of 77 in Mount Vernon, Skagt County, Washington, USA. She married George Leonard Tobin. son of James W. and Stella A. Tobin. He was born June 13, 1895 in Minnesota, USA and died June 23, 1980 at the age of 85. George was a US Army Veteran and served from April 25, 1918 to May 14, 1919. Marie is my 2nd cousin 2x removed and an ancestor I have followed.
- Dorothy C. Ruehl daughter of Henry John and Margaretha (Heck) Ruehl was born about 1903 in Nebraska, USA. She may have married E. A. Johnson (based on brother Harry’s obituary through a process of elimination), but I was unable to find any documents to support this.

1940 US Federal Census shows Elizabeth living with her mother Margaret and sister Pauline in St. Paul Minnesota. By 1946 she has moved to Los Angeles, most likely with her brother Harry, who moved to Los Angeles in 1945 to open a Packard dealership, where she married Alonzo D. Alexander Jr. when she was 39 years old. 1

Florentine and Alred Heider had at least one child: RICHARD ALFRED HEIDER (1933-2006) who was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and died in California. Richard married HAZEL M. UNKNOWN. - Margaret Theresa Ruehl daughter of Henry John and Margaretha (Heck) Ruehl was born 7 Nov 1910 , most likely in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. She died 1 Jul 2000 at the age of 89. She married Jewell Thore Hage, the son of Sigmund J. and Bertha Malina (Thompson) Hage / Hague. He was born 8 Oct 1909 in Driscoll, North Dakota, USA and died 16 Nov 1987 at the age of 78 in Los Angeles County, California, USA.
